Kyle Schwingel is a visual artist currently based in Madison, Wisconsin. Schwingel uses the engineered and natural worlds as an entrance into an understanding of change informed by environmentalism, behavioral therapy, cultural and historical positions of landscape, and the relationship between art and internet culture.
This understanding is repeatedly fractured by an anxiety borne from the fragility of human limitation and a necessary dependence on the natural landscape as it is supplemented, as well as supplanted, by the increasingly built, the synthetic, and the digital that, in turn, reveals the artifice of the “natural.” This contemporary topography that acts as a setting for the quotidian routine is also the site of such anxieties as the expected conditions are reconfigured in order to negotiate a protean exchange between human behavior, the environment, and what new future lies ahead.
Kyle Schwingel grew up in rural central Wisconsin and received a BA in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay in 2015 and an MFA from The Otis College of Art and Design in May 2020.
